Time keeps on slippin

I was going to say something earlier about how I couldn't believe it was August already, but it slipped my mind — and now the month is over half gone. So instead, I will ask this question: When did time start moving at warp speed?

I've got one kid going into eighth grade and another going into kindergarten. School starts Friday. It's early this year, which doesn't help matters. I heard a rumor they're wanting to start school the first week of August next year, but I've not been able to confirm it. Either way, when 2011 rolls around, I'll have a kid in high school who will be getting ready to drive... and I will be hitting the big four-oh myself.

The crickets of late summer are outside chirping away... and on schedule, unlike the freaks from earlier this year. Fall is sneaking up, and the holidays are racing fast behind... Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Winter is around the corner. Odd to think of winter when it's still around 90° every day, but it will be here in no time.

And the older I get, the more pronounced the effect. It reminds me of an old joke about the laws of thermodynamics. It's a game we all must play, and there are three simple rules:

  1. You can't win.
  2. You can't break even.
  3. You can't quit.

I'm not complaining about any of this, I promise — I know it might sound that way, but really, it's just an observation. I remember when I first noticed time's faster passage, about six or seven years ago, but it was nothing like this. And, I'm pretty sure the effect will continue getting stronger, until one day, a month will seem to pass in the blink of an eye. Oh, wait....
