Summer doldrums

This is the time of year when everything comes to a halt. The weather is either storms or blazing sun, the kids on summer vacation have done it all and have reached a point of incurable boredom. School starts earlier than usual this year — less than six weeks to go — so I guess you should live it up while you can, if that's your lot.

It's not my lot, so for me, it's look toward the next holiday. Labor Day... eight weeks away. You know, I think August could use a holiday just as much as February could. Let's just make something up and make it a holiday. How about National Aviation Day? That's as good as anything else, I think, and August 19 would be a perfect day for a holiday. Just think, another opportunity for giant mattress sales....

Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty..."

The Lovin' Spoonful

Just six months ago I was exhausted from the winter and the constant snowstorms. And not one bit happy about it. I'm not complaining about the summer, at least I'm really trying hard not to. Rather, I almost feel like I'm waiting for something, and this is reflected in the season.

Yesterday the moon met the sun in the sky, casting a shadow across the ocean, touching a few minor islands and moving on. And perhaps an extra holiday in the middle of the summer doldrums would feel something like that: a brief shadow, almost enough to make a difference, but not quite enough to satisfy.

But hey, I'd be happy to give it a shot.
