Double jeopardy
Wow... where do I begin?
I won't name the restaurant here, but I will say this isn't their first offense.
It is, however, the first time they've made an appearance here. For those of
you keeping score, here are the offenses:
- A chances. Don't mix singular and plural. Simple enough! You wouldn't say "a dogs was walking through my yard." Likewise, you shouldn't offer people "a chances" at a free lunch.
- "Free lunch". Wikipedia lists several uses of quote marks. Among them: speech, irony, unusual usage, self-reference, and titles. I feel like the intent here, though, is emphasis — something for which quotes are frequently misused. It's frequent enough to have spawned an entire blog devoted to the topic, often with very humorous results.
I try to stay away from mocking handwritten signs simply because the pre-printed, professional-looking ones are so much more fun to point fingers at — but I couldn't resist this one. Now for the next mystery: Why are all these things in restaurants?
