Christmas aftermath

Not exactly the most relaxing Christmas ever, but it'll do. Either way, it's over. And I'm really starting to wonder if chaos is just going to be an accepted part of my life for the time being.

It started early in the morning, of course. Having two kids in your house on Christmas morning invariably leads to an early start. But first, a little background on a long-standing Christmas tradition in our house, and how it came to an end this year. The two rules on Christmas morning are these: Kids do not go into the living room unless Mom and Dad are with them, and nobody gets to open anything until Dad has a little coffee. Well, I was awakened this morning to Andrew saying, "Come look! Santa brought me a Rocky the Robot Truck!" Meaning one of the two simple rules had been broken. For all I knew, he'd wandered out there at 3:00 this morning to get a peek, and I wouldn't put it past him. The coffee rule was enforced with rigor.

The usual madness of unwrapping packages and throwing paper was interrupted by Charlie dashing into the living room then bolting back out again. And from downstairs there arose such a clatter, Martha sprang from the couch to see what was the matter. She reported that Charlie was carrying around one of the toy mice he'd received for Christmas — until she saw it in the floor at her feet. So in the midst of the normal Christmas chaos, the cat had managed to catch another mouse, his second this year and only two months after the last one. Mixed feelings, there, I guess, because normally there aren't mice in the house this late in the year... but they're getting caught, so that's a good thing, right?

At some point in the middle of all this, Andrew took it upon himself to eat an entire package of Gummy Life Savers... something I don't think I'd be able to do myself, even if I liked gummy candies. He was quite the opportunist, though, which is not a good sign for my future sanity.

The house is a wreck. Boxes everywhere, bits of paper, toy cars, Legos, new DVDs, and so forth, along with our normal level of low to moderate clutter and the kitchen being torn up. Not complaining really, just taking it all in... the culmination of several simultaneous things.
